Costco Kirkland Signature Harvest Burger Review

I’ve had a few people reach out to me to request for a review on the Costco Kirkland Signature Harvest Burger!

Please note that this review was not paid for or sponsored by any third party. I purchased this product with my own money and the opinions in this review are strictly my own. I am not affiliated with Costco or any of its suppliers. I am just a fan of the company. I write these reviews to help my fellow shoppers.

I am definitely not a vegetarian. At least not currently. In junior high I did randomly decide to become a vegetarian due to my love for animals. That lasted about a week, until my mom asked me what I would be having for dinner because she was ordering pepperoni pizza for the rest of the family. I am totally open to trying vegan and vegetarian options and will always jump at the chance to see if I can find something that tastes better or as good as its meat-based counterpart. I had a few people reach out to me to review these veggie burgers, so I decided to take one for the team and buy a box. When I put the box of the Kirkland Signature Harvest Burgers in our cart, my husband flat-out told me there was no way he was trying them with me.

I eventually did get my husband to try them and his exact words were, “it tastes way better than I expected”, which I agree with. I tried them alone and also in a bun with mustard, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. They tasted way better in a bun with toppings; alone they were a bit on the dry side. The patty definitely does have a similar taste to a meat patty. I would say it tastes more like a sausage patty (the kind you get in breakfast sandwiches) than a burger, so if you’re looking for a burger clone this may not be for you. It contains brown rice and rolled oats and to be honest, it tasted like a hybrid between a sausage patty and rice latke (like a potato pancake but replace the potato with rice). They do have a lot of flavor and seasoning in them so that definitely enhances the taste but I didn’t love the seasonings they used. I didn’t season these with anything extra.

Cost-wise 15 burgers cost $12.99. You definitely won’t break the bank with these, but you do risk spending $13 dollars on something you might not like. You’re looking at about $1.15 per burger, which isn’t bad at all, even if you just think you might want to try them. I also think they would be great to have on hand if you’re hosting a big barbecue or party since I’ve noticed a lot of people are starting to prefer vegetarian options. I wouldn’t feel like I’m doing my vegetarian guests a disservice by serving these (although I’d definitely be curious to hear their thoughts on them!).

Costco Kirkland Signature Frozen Harvest Burger

They come frozen in a bag in the box, with each one individually separated by a piece of parchment paper. It’s very convenient to just remove one to cook. You do have to take the time to cook them though. The box shows three different options for cooking: stove, grill or oven. We decided to grill them and my husband cooked it to the box instructions; next time he would probably cook it a little less than the box said as it seemed to come off slightly overdone. He also mentioned that something (the cheese?) seemed to be oozing out onto the barbecue. You don’t have to grill these though; there are two other very convenient options, so overall these score quite high on convenience.
Costco Kirkland Signature Harvest Burger Nutrition
Costco Kirkland Signature Harvest Burger Nutrition

Let’s talk nutrition. Each burger contains 170 calories, 5 grams of fat, 12 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber and 1 gram of sugar. To give you a comparison, the Kirkland Signature Uncooked Lean Sirloin Beef Patties contain 320 calories, 23 grams of fat and 29 grams of protein. The Harvest Burger is pretty nutritious in my opinion; a moderate amount of of protein, not high in fat, low in sugar and high in fiber. The one thing that makes these less nutritious is the high sodium, 480 mg per burger. Sodium usually makes things taste better, but some people have to watch their sodium intake closely. I will also mention that these are obviously not vegan, as they contain cheese. Also, they contain soy. I know some people are allergic to soy or don’t like to eat large amounts of soy.

Overall, I found these a little dry and didn’t love the seasonings they used. I’ve tried numerous veggie burgers and I would probably put these in the mediocre category. I would definitely eat them again if I was served them at a barbecue and have no problem with it but I won’t be purchasing these again. If you’re interested in reducing your meat intake or you’re a vegetarian looking for a nutritious substitute for beef burgers, I definitely would suggest you try these out for yourself. 1. I purchased them years ago when our daughter was vegetarian, which lasted about 9 years. We all enjoyed them . I thought the flavour was very good and I still purchase them on occasion.

  2. These seem to have replaced the Garden Burger that Costco used to sell. I really liked the Garden Burgers and bought several boxes. I will not buy a 2nd box of the new Harvest Burgers, they are dry and bland and aren’t nearly as good as the product they replaced.

  3. We love these. After defrosting slightly in the microwave, we fry for 5 minutes on each side in a bit of olive oil along with loads of sliced mushrooms and onions in the same pan, covered for the first half of cooking time. They get crispy on the outside but moist on the inside with the melted cheese; at the end we add a slice of low fat cheese on top. But they do tend to spit/splatter the oil when you first put them in the pan.

  4. As mentioned previously, the Chipotle Bean Burgers are my favourite- despite being a beef burger lover. Add some salsa and they are awesome, but too spicy for my husband. I find most vegetarian burgers are dry and too high in sodium.
Thanks for the review! I look forward to more.

  5. My husband and I both did not like them. Found that they had hard bits like grissol. Taste was ok, but the bits part we were a turn off. Yes Costco has a great return policy. I didn’t have my receipt and refunded me no questions ask. That’s what I love about Costco. You can try something and if you don’t like it, return it.. I do love the yves veggie burgers, how they are wrapped individually. Makes easy to take out what you want. Found them very tasteful

  6. My d ughter is a vegetria. and likes these burgers. She prefers the chipotle black bean burger Costco carries but both are good options when you are having a bbq and non carnivores are coming.

  7. I’ve bought these in the past as a lighter choice when on Weight Watchers. With the new WW program, these are 5 points. A chicken breast is zero points. I don’t mind the taste but for me, there is too much garlic. I’ll stick with chicken.

  8. I much prefer these fried. Just a little splash of olive oil…not floating in it. That way they get a little crust on the outside but the inside stays tender. I found them a little dry on the BBQ too.

  9. Shame it’s not vegan..I’m not vegan but friends and some of my family are.
The new A&W Vegan burger is sooooo popular I’m hoping company’s will just on it to!
    Hint!Hint! Costco 🙂

  10. I have purchased the morning star veggie burgers from the States a long time ago, I don’t think you can get the same in Canada I find they are way tastier than Kirkland brand!

  11. Like you, I tried them but perfer the real beef burger. I found they were dry and knowing they were not beef played with my head while eating it. Once and done!

  12. This brand contais egg so as a vegan I won’t eat them. Something to remember if you plan on feeding a vegan. Our Costco carries the Yves veggie burger which is vegan. It is in the refrigerated section with the pre-packaged meats. They aren’t exactly a meat substitute though….just something to put between a bun and dress like a hamburger.

Costco is great for vegan options….but would love to see them stock bulk bags of Gardein products!

    • I agree I would totally LOVE to see bulk Gardein at Costco Canada.
Such a great product even though I’m not vegetarian I do try to cut back on animal product consumption. My daughter is vegan and she introduced me to Gardein.

    • I agree with you, my husband and I loved the Yves vegan burgers. I tried the the Kirkland and end up returning them. We both found there was something in the Kirkland burgers had some small hard pieces to chew. Almost felt like grissol. Turned us off. Costco has a great policy In Returning them.
