Azuma Gourmet Seaweed Salad Review

Last week on the blog I reviewed the Costco Delici Belgian Chocolate Soufflé, the Costco Don Lee Farms Organic Veggie Bites and the Costco Summ! Apple Pie Rolls with Caramel Sauce!

I also posted a Youtube video review for the Costco Marie Morin Crème Brulee.

Today I’m reviewing something I’ve seen at Costco for quite a long time but have never tried. The Azuma Gourmet Seaweed Salad. I haven’t had a lot of seaweed salad before, only at restaurants so I was curious to try this.

I paid $12.99 Canadian for the 794 gram container of seaweed salad.

You can use seaweed salad as a great side dish with any Asian meal, use it to top stir-fry bowls or enjoy it with some tofu, green salad and a dressing like the Kewpie Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing. The seaweed salad needs to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is about a month from the date we purchased it. I’ve read that you can actually freeze seaweed salad in individual portions if you don’t use it up in time.

A 1/2 cup serving is 90 calories, four and a half grams of fat, 750 mg of sodium, 11 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, nine grams of sugar and one gram of protein. Seaweed salad is extremely nutritious and low in calories, fat and carbohydrates but it is high in sugar and sodium. This is vegan and gluten-free as well.

The ingredients list is short and sweet with seaweed and seasonings as the main ingredients. I didn’t taste any mushrooms and it wasn’t very spicy despite the chili peppers and mushrooms listed.

My husband and I had differing opinions on this seaweed salad so I think this is one of those products that some individuals really love and some aren’t crazy for. The texture is very crunchy which we both liked, not at all soggy. The seaweed salad is sweet, salty and very flavorful. There’s an earthy aftertaste that my husband didn’t mind but I wasn’t a fan of.

We both agreed we had a lot of seaweed stuck in our teeth after eating this. I think if you know you like seaweed salad to begin with you’d enjoy this Costco product. I didn’t mind it, I just didn’t love it. My husband liked it.

Cost: 7/10 (I’ve never bought seaweed salad before so have little to compare the cost to!)

Convenience: 10/10

Nutrition: 6.5/10

Taste: 7.5/10

  1. It looks like they’ve lowered the amount of sugar in it as my package says 6 G, but there is also a ton of artificial ingredients in here from dyes, gums AKA MSG, sugar alternatives and preservatives. A half cup serving is 110 calories and overall this is not a product that I would buy again or recommend. I love seaweed salad but it’s supposed to be Savory not sweet and artificial tasting. A half cup serving is 110 calories. Unfortunately what should be a healthy salad is anything but.

  2. If this salad is extremely nutritious why did it only score 6.5 /10 for nutrition? What would this extremely nutritious salad need to get a score of 10/10?
