Last week on Costcuisine I reviewed the Costco Candy Pop Popcorn M&M’s Minis, Costco 44th Street Beef Pot Roast and the Costco Eat Smart Sweet Kale Salad Kit.

Today I’m reviewing the Chef Dumas Sweet Puff Pastry. I saw these at Costco and wanted to use them to make strawberry shortcake.
I paid $6.99 Canadian for a pack of two plastic containers each containing six puff pastry.
Both my husband and I were shocked at the best before date. Almost two years from the date we purchased the puff pastry! The plastic containers reseal and can easily be stored in the freezer. I have a bunch of ideas for ways you can use these puff pastries! I made strawberry shortcake but you could also serve them with sautéed apples and ice cream, with chocolate hazelnut spread and some raspberries and whipped cream. The puff pastries have a indented circle center so it’s easy to fill them.
These aren’t healthy but I bought them for dessert which is never really healthy in our house! I do not love the ingredients list at all though. Instead of just butter there’s margarine and shortening made from palm, canola and soybean oil. Also why is there soy flour? Two puff pastries are 340 calories, 23 grams of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, five grams of sugar, four grams of protein and 220 mg of sodium.
These are light and flaky but they’re also so very dry. I feel like for strawberry shortcake you need to soak them in the berry juice for awhile before constructing them or there will never be enough whipped cream and strawberries to cut the dryness. These are like a very large, sweet butter cookie. The crystallized sugar adds some sweetness to them which is nice but I don’t think these are great for strawberry shortcake or other desserts.
