Last week on the blog I reviewed the Costco Kirkland Signature Organic Marinara from Tuscany, Costco Aidells Organic Chicken & Apple Smoked Sausage and the Kirkland Signature Sous Vide Pork Belly.

Recently my toddler daughter has decided donuts are her absolute favorite treat and plain glazed or cinnamon sugar are her favorite so when I saw these small Mrs. Dunsters Sugar Donuts at Costco I decided to pick up a pack for her to try. I paid $8.79 Canadian for the 648-gram container.
The donuts come in a plastic resealable container and the best-before date is about three weeks from when I purchased them. We opened them to try on a Saturday and by the Tuesday when my mom decided to try one they were completely stale. I wouldn’t recommend freezing them because I don’t think they’d really maintain their freshness even frozen.
Two donuts have 260 calories, 15 grams of fat, 30 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, 16 grams of sugar, three grams of protein and 220 milligrams of sodium. Donuts are known as an unhealthy/treat food so I wasn’t expecting these to be low in calories, fat, carbs or sugar but I’ve had some pretty amazing donuts in my day that are totally worth the calories, sugar etc. If you’re in Edmonton or Calgary I highly recommend checking out Doughnut Party.
They taste pretty much like I expected after seeing them with the lid off- like cheap, super processed grocery store donuts. They’re kind of cakey and moist, though I think that might be more from the amount of grease (lard) in them than an intentional choice. They’re quite sweet from the sugar, but there’s another weird flavor in there. I think it’s the lard. Overall these donuts aren’t horrible, but they’re pretty bad.

My family enjoys these donuts. Never had a box last long enough to go stale. I have brought back the donuts from Nova Scotia (4 boxes) and they freeze very well. No one has noticed or ever complained of a greasy taste. Its the first donut that for me tastes like home and that I think is part of the difference – the west is full of stuffed donuts with flavours versus a plain sugar donut deepfried.
That’s weird- the Mrs. Dunsters that were popular in the Maritimes when I was a kid were whole wheat and moist little nuggets that were like timbits with a dimple. And they never lasted long enough to get stale. I guess nothing is good forever.
I completely agree with your review!! Won’t buy these again!
