I usually try to keep my cart restricted to grocery items since I can usually avoid paying duty when restricting my purchases to food. Sometimes, though I can’t pass up a deal. I ended up picking up some umbrellas and some kids sticker activity books. If you are tempted to buy the Pepper Spray, I’ll just remind you that this is not allowed into Canada – you will most likely get it seized (or worse) if it is found when attempting to cross the border. There were lots of plants in stock, but these too would get confiscated so I didn’t take photos.
I have had good luck bringing one bottle of wine or a 6 pack of beer back over the border as long as I don’t bring back anything else… but it is always up to the Border Services Officer.
@Nafisa Merali. I would want to confirm with CBSA whether or not the (free) at home test kits from the BC government are accepted at the border along with an approved certificate from a health care professional that verified the test results. The same goes with any you buy in the USA. There’s nothing worse than feeling overconfident you got all your ducks in a row when in fact you don’t.
Enjoyed the Bellingham post very much. Have you ever considered adding Grocery Outlet in Ferndale and/or Bellingham to your regular US shopping? When my partner and I visit Washington state we always go there and the bargains are jaw-dropping!
If it was me and if I did the rapid test in my car, I’m certain I’d mess things up and drop the testing fluid or contaminate the kit. I’d need some extra hands to do a video selfie to verify my results with the provider.
This sounds way too complicated and requires a lot of dexterity and patience. If I had a motorhome, that changes everything though. I’ll wait and see what the Canadian government does.
For clarity, you did not get your rapid test before you left Canada, but did it before your return when already in the USA? Wouldn’t this be rather risky, in case you were positive (yet asymptomatic) and then would be stuck in the US.
You must take the test outside of Canada. Rapid tests are easy to take. If you are worried you can always take one before you leave to make sure you receive a negative result.
I’d just like to add some clarity which hasn’t been mentioned here and in Part 1.
If you’re going to the US, you’re going to have to cough up about $12 for a roaming pass for your cell phone data usage.
The tele-session through rapidtest canada will set you back $35; while from the same provider 5 rapid antigen tests will cost $100.
Pharmacies in Washington State are in short supply of rapid tests and you’ll need an appointment for the rapid antigen test at the pharmacy. The Government of Canada is very restrictive on what rapid tests they will accept, but you cannot do them yourself unless supervised by an accredited/recgonized centre like rapidtestcanada.
If you add up all the costs here, you need to ensure it’s worth the cost for a meagre day trip.
There are some [credible] rumours circulating around that the Canadian government should be announcing at the end of the month (March) the removal of all testing requirements (not sure if it includes the unvaccinated or not) for travel. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. I’d like to see the return of the weekly or monthly Costco Bellingham by CocoWest.
As such, if it was me, I’d defer travelling to the US until after Spring Break.
Thank you for the Information. As of today Rapid test Kits are available for Age 50 plus , so its much cheaper to get the Free tests and pay the service for Proper reporting like you did.
Thanks for the pics. I was hoping you’d elaborate further on the testing et al in part 2 including how you made contact with the third party company to verify your test results, if Costco pharmacy provides testing to us Canadians, and now much.
Hi Shannon, there isn’t much more for me to say on the appointments that I haven’t already said, I set up everything through https://rapidtestcanada.ca/ You can book times for your appointment through their portal. There are quite a few different companies popping up to fill this need now if you do a quick Google Search. I did my test in my car of the Costco Parking lot. As soon as you finish your test, they send you an E-mail with your results which can be shown electronically at the border. There was no advertised testing at Costco. There were some pharmacies in Bellingham, but their advertised cost was $60 USD. The test I took was $35.00 CAD

Can you cross-reference this to your coconorthwest blog? Thanks
