Dear Costco Shoppers – Stay Calm: Canada will not run out of Toilet Paper

Hi Everyone,

With all the panic surrounding Covid-19, many Costco stores have rationed Toilet Paper.  Today at the Costco in Langley, they are limiting toilet paper purchases to one (1) per household.  There are now line-ups to buy them stretch around the whole store making it hard to navigate through the aisles adding more stress to your usual Costco shopping trip.  This weekend will no doubt be a challenging time to do any shopping.  The lines to Costco have exceeded any line I have ever seen in recent memory.

I just want to let people know that from what I have read, Canada will not run out of toilet paper.  There have been shortages in other countries, namely Australia, that rely on toilet paper manufactured in China, but, here in Canada, we have lots of paper manufacturing capabilities.  According the the CBC, employees at paper manufacturing plants are working overtime to satisfy the extra demand and the supply chain is working well to continue to provide products to stores.

I understand that this is a stressful time for everyone and would like to remind that if you are shopping this weekend, to try your best to be kind and considerate to everyone.

Stay safe and wash your hands!

Happy shopping

  1. Weird that can’t check online if you have tp stock. I have to check in person and every time so far the Burnaby, British Columbia location has run out…

  2. A crisis of this magnitude certainly lets you know the true makeup of people. People have to have serious mental issues to hoard and deny others products that will help us all be safer. Sanitation products stored while people in need go without should be considered a crime!!!

  3. Good idea, Phil..As it is, people have gone stupid. No where are we hearing of diarrhea epidemics related to this virus. The news casters and their advice to “stock up” should be amended to clarify “stocking up”.

  4. Thanks for this post and reiterating that toilet paper is not a scarce commodity here in canada. Let’s not all panic and contribute to a toilet paper shortage and mass hysteria!

  5. I truly don’t get the hoarding of TP. Where I live there is no TP and no cleaning supplies in any stores. I can understand the cleaning supplies being bought up but TP. You would think it would be paper towel. I am in agreement with Costco not allowing returns. Does everyone think their towns or cities will be shut down like Italy? Is this the reason for buying all the TP? I am baffled

  6. Purex toilet paper is manufactured in New Westminster by Kruger Products using Canadian wood and their recycled TP is made from paper collected from Canadian sources. I called them and they confirmed they aren’t running out.

  7. Thanks. I still don’t understand why earlier this week when I was at Costco I saw people buying multiple packs of toilet paper…and nothing else. Wouldn’t it make more sense to swap some of that toilet paper for a box each of juice and crackers in case you do get the flu?!

Also, everyone buy stocks in Netflix and streaming services…I suspect they’re about to do very well in the next month haha!

  8. Thank you for this post. I was at Costco West Edmonton yesterday and although the lines were beyond anything I have ever witnessed I was so happy to see people being helpful and kind to one another. Wishing everyone safe shopping this weekend!

  9. I second that costco should make a policy to state “certain products will not be refundable until further notice”.

    • What the heck ppl?? Canadian tire has tones of kitchen napkins rolls!!! Those are good for the toilet!! Just wrip them in half (and quarters.. ) depending of the size
We’ve done it many times for couple of days till we went to get TP!!

  10. What sucks is people who actually need it who suffer from chrons and colitis that have many bathroom trips can’t purchase tp cuz people are stocking up it sucks people are so rude

    • Agree. That’s what I’ve been trying to explain to others too. I’m allergic to many of the brands they cause irritation , the only one that doesn’t seems to be the president’s choice for superstore. But unfortunately I’ve had no luck getting any. I’ve bought purex for the rest of the family and I run a family daycare at home.
I’ve had to put mine away just for me.

  11. Please Please COSTCO…put out a message on your webpages to all customers that returns/refunds for toilet paper and all other associated paper products will not be accepted…period! That will probably help to curb the stupidity. Costco’s amazing return policy may be giving people a sense ease in deciding to hoard.

    • I am so glad they are finally at this point. It is just unfair! I mean, I need toilet paper because I’m almost out and I can’t buy it unless I wake up at the crack of dawn and stand in a line forever…

I must say, I was at Costco yesterday night and people were kind to each other. No pushing, no shoving, recommendations on products and people helping each other out. Not at all what I expected.

  12. I hope people realize that one thing people with Covid19 all have in common is:
They all used TOILET PAPER DAILY!!
    A co-incidence? I wonder!

Good luck, good Health! I will continue to use my Bidet Toilet seat that we bought from Costco years ago and use one roll of Charmin/month!!

    • The funny thing is Covid-19 affects the lungs, not the intestines, so a single Kirkland pack is probably going to last you through the crisis!

I agree on the bidet. We have one from Costco and another cheap under-$20 one from Amazon. For me, I find the cheap one works just as well. The biggest concern was hooking into the cold water line, but it’s room temperature as you don’t run it long enough to get cold! Everyone should save their time and money and get one of these instead.
