Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookie Review

When I find something really tasty that I haven’t tried at Costco, I always want to tell everyone! I would do it with family and friends long before I started my blog. I think it’s because Costco generally has higher-quality items at great prices, so if they make something spectacular, you feel like you’ve struck gold because you’re getting a great deal on it on top of it being delicious. This is exactly how I feel about the Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies.

I can’t recall seeing the Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies before. Maybe they’re a seasonal item that Costco has had before? I feel like I would have noticed them though, because I’m a huge fan of the cookies in the bakery section (especially the Costco Kirkland Signature Ginger Cookies that they have again for the holidays). Anyway, I had very high hopes that these shortbread cookies would be similarly delicious, and they delivered! Boy oh boy, are they good. If you like shortbread, these are heavenly. My husband and I both loved them, and shortbread cookies aren’t normally something he gets too excited for. The shortbread is on the softer side, but not super soft where they seem half-baked; the cookies still have a slight crispness to them. They’re buttery and delicious, but not overly sweet. They have just the right amount of sugar to compliment the buttery goodness. If you find plain shortbread cookies boring, these cookies might not be for you as they don’t have any icing or other added flavors and textures. Still, I would strongly encourage everyone to give them a try; they don’t need a bunch of icing, chocolate, sprinkles, nuts or added artificial flavors. They are just soft, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, traditional butter shortbread cookies that taste like they came from a high-end bakery or a grandmother’s kitchen.

The Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies come in a pack of 24 for $9.99 Canadian. Considering the quality of these cookies, I feel the cost is quite reasonable. I would absolutely purchase these again. They don’t taste like cheap, store-bought shortbread cookies. I’m pretty sure if you put these out on a platter at your holiday gathering and said they were from some local bakery, nobody would question you on it. You could probably save some money by making your own shortbread cookies as they are made with just a few simple ingredients, but saving the time and energy it would take to make them is definitely worth something!

As with other Costco bakery cookies, the Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies come conveniently packaged in a plastic container that is easy to reseal. There are three rows/sections of eight cookies. When it comes to holiday cookies, I need variety. I never want just one kind of cookie on the plate, regardless of whether I’m putting a few on a plate for my husband and I to enjoy for dessert or I’m loading up a plate to put out for guests. Even though 24 cookies may seem like a lot to some people, they freeze well and you can just take them out as you want/need them. I immediately put these in a Ziplock bag after I had taste-tested one (okay, maybe two) and put them in my freezer. Around the holidays, I tend to accumulate a pretty good selection of cookies (Costco and homemade) in my freezer, and I love being able to easily grab an assortment of different kinds whenever I feel like it. Shortbread cookies are a Christmas staple, so my collection wouldn’t have felt complete without these!

When I look at the ingredients for these cookies, I’m pleasantly surprised to see that the list is short and that actual butter is the first ingredient. I thought maybe they would use margarine or worse yet, a bunch of chemical-sounding ingredients that I could barely pronounce. I suspect the basic, traditional ingredients are one of the main reasons why these shortbread cookies taste so great. Costco does not post the nutrition information on the cookies. Obviously these aren’t the healthiest but I feel like there are much worse things than enjoying a few butter shortbread cookies over the holiday season. Plus I have a soon-to-be 95-year-old grandma who is obsessed with butter and claims it’s what has kept her going for so long (she still enjoys huge pats of butter on plain crackers as a snack).

I wanted to review the Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies so other Christmas cookie lovers would know how delicious they are before they buy a more expensive and/or less delicious version somewhere else or stay up all night frantically baking their own as they try to get everything ready for the holidays. The Costco Kirkland Signature Butter Shortbread Cookies should be a hit with even the fussiest shortbread cookie fans, and they would be a perfect addition to your holiday cookie platter.
