Costco & Weekend Update: New Restriction – Maximum 2 People Per Membership in Store
Hi Everyone!
WEEKEND UPDATE UPDATE:
So usually I have a Weekend Update, but unfortunately, I had to take a sick day. I had a sore throat for the past week that just kept getting worse and worse. One Wednesday, I wasn’t able to sleep, eat, drink or talk, or even open my mouth properly for about 24 hours. My doctor was all booked up and only taking video consultations late into the day and was told to go to the ER.
Once you arrive at the ER, they make you call the hospital to check yourself in and are told to wait in your car until a nurse phones you to do a telephone triage. I got called about 5 minutes later and was admitted. All that being said, after getting lots of pokes and prods, I was diagnosed with a peritonsillar abscess which could be taken care of in a small day surgery.
I haven’t been able to eat anything other than soup for the last couple of days and my wife has been having lots of fun taking care of all the kids necessities which attempting to work from home.
New Restriction – Maximum 2 People Per Membership in Store (CHILDREN EXEMPT)
Costco has added even more membership restrictions to assist with physical distancing in the warehouses.
Costco is now allowing no more than two people to enter the warehouse on each membership. ** This temporary change is for your safety and the safety of our employees and other members, and to further assist with our social distancing efforts.
I asked about how this policy applies to children and was told that CHILDREN DO NOT COUNT AND WILL BE ALLOWED IN. If they children are adults, then the above limits will apply. This was the information provided to me at the Downtown Vancouver Store. I specifically asked about bringing in 3 children.
While in an ideal world, we would be leaving our children at home to protect them, please be aware that people come from all sorts of situations and may not have the ability to leave their children at home when shopping. Spouses of essential workers, single parents, spouses of shift workers all may not have the option to leave their children at home. Please just remember that people that everyone has a different set of circumstances and to keep any judgmental comments to yourself. We are all in this together!

Our small family of 3 was refused entry together at NW Edmonton Costco yesterday because of the 2 person limit. I mentioned I had heard children were exempt (because of seeing it here) and they explained there were no exceptions for children. Maybe this policy is different for each store?

We returned from Costco and Save-On today. We couldn’t make it inside as the line-ups were unbearably long.
We ended up going to Save-On. Hubby was in the car with the kids, one person limit strictly enforced at Save-On.
Thank you for keeping us updated, we really appreciate it. I was also glad to see the status of getting into Abbotsford Costco (Tyler, thanks), definitely will be sticking with PC Express exclusively during this crisis.

I would like to say something if I may, as this is obviously a challenging situation..
Everyone needs to be diligent about actually staying home and finding the best way to get supplies while protecting themselves and others. There may be people out there that you may think aren’t following protocol, but you don’t know the story behind their lives and whom they are picking up supplies for. I am not a single parent, but I remember what life was like for my mother who was (with 4 of us).
Being kind and “non-judgy” and helping others is what will help us endure through this together, even if we can’t be together. We are not in a war, but I remember the stories of hardship from my British grandparents whom endured that time. Point is, it was helping others that you didn’t know very well, appreciating family and friends, as well as the simple things when they had those moments that helped them develop a character about themselves that is often lost in our world today. Selfishness and just plain nasty demeanour was a rarity. Don’t let this challenge bring out the worst in you, let it bring out the best. It’s a time like this that we will most learn about others and ourselves.

I appreciate all of your hard work and updates. It helps with decision making and planning. There are a lot of people who need to adhere to budgets, even more so now. Knowing what the new processes or restrictions are helps to manage our time.
This is an unusual time for everyone. Lots of fear, anxiety and constantly changing messages. While I find some of the comments negative or poorly worded, the discussion is healthy and provides a sense of community. You don’t have to have a comment section, but this site is the better for it!

Get well soon bud. I went to Costco today Abbotsford. Stood in line at 8:30 at the back of the building. Got in the building 9:30. Good 1 hour. At that point the back of the line was wrapped all the way around the building. Crazy days

@corinne what would you suggest a solo parent with 2 children under 8 do about much needed items from Costco? They cannot use a babysitter, as that’s against the covid guidelines, they cannot leave the children in the car, as that would be unsafe, the children cannot be left home alone. Costco is not offering a click and collect service.

Rarely do I weigh in on online comments but I think people should check the tone of their message before hitting submit. Promoting your privilege? Wow, just wow. How would they enforce this if a family just entered Costco one after another by showing multiple membership cards but still under the same membership? Makes no sense why people would do this but I am sure some will try.
In fact I am a front line physician practicing in BC and based off my comprehension of the symptoms he described in his post I would have suspected the abscess and I would not have been able to treat that over the phone or video.

Next time read the whole post before scolding the author, he clearly states he spoke to his doctor’s office first. If he had not gone to the ER (even eithout the thoughtful and appropriate action of calling his doctor’s office first) the condition he had could have easily been life threatening, because that abscess can close off his airway. Even someone who has suspected COVID is advised to go to the ER if their symptoms are not manageable at home.

For anyone still reading, I was at Costco Langley on Friday morning and they had the Starbucks Verona blend K cups on sale for $29.99 ($7 off) and the Opti-Free contact lens solution 2 pack for $12.99 ($5 off). I’m afraid I didn’t do nearly as thorough a job as Tynan usually does but these were on my list and I lucked out! They also had a small pallet of Soft Soap (which I’m sure sold out in a couple of hours) but no more Lysol Wipes. They were also sold out of the Cascade Platinum dishwasher pods, too bad for my shopping list.
I hope you’re back to your old self very soon! It’s nice to see the amazing protocol your hospital has in place for dealing with emergent situations. Also, thanks for your updates reminding us to not judge others. We just don’t know what’s going on in others lives. I shop for multiple families when I go out. I make my trips count as I try to only go once every 2 weeks but I sure get the eyeball from some people. Kindness and understanding go a long way. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Thanks for recognizing that everyone has different circumstances. I have a child with special needs and it is not safe for me to leave her home alone. I would have to take her with me.
He’s not recognising anything. He’s just echoing what the Costco location in downtown told him. Costco West does not make the rules. I hope you can understand the difference.

The entire purpose of the two person policy is to prevent children and families to come in and browse the store for entertainment purposes.
It’s rather obvious you’ve been given incorrect information which is often the case lately. We have seen some warehouse locations refusing to allow physically disabled despite this policy clearly written on Costco’s website.
Costco’s website makes no exceptions to the children rule. One can justify anything. The fact is we are now in crisis mode. Self-entitlement and extenuating circumstance have always been an excuse. Are single parents bringing their kids to work? I don’t think so.
The two person policy is absolute. The manager of the downtown location either misunderstood the new Costco policy or decided not to adhere to it. It only became effective on April 3.
Hi Corinne, this will be the only comment I allow on this topic. Not allowing a single parent with two children into a store is textbook discrimination based on family status as defined by the Canadian Charter of Rights and freedoms. We might be in emergency situation, but please, let’s all try to be tolerant of people who may in less fortunate situations.

Your physician should be scolded for not following COVID-19 guidelines by the Ministry of Health. You are never supposed to arrive at the ER with these kinds of symptoms. You must call 811 in advance. Your information here will likely influence and encourage others to do the same as you and arrive without calling first. Please edit your experience to reflect the proper protocol to follow.

I was actually told by my doctors office to go to the ER. They suspected that I had strep throat from my symptoms, but I needed to see a doctor to get a requisition. Since doctor are only doing phone visits, the recommended that I go visit the ER.
It’s too bad there aren’t likes/upvotes for comments. It would bring relevant/popular comments to the top for quick views.
Based on you not being able to open your mouth for a day, I would have also suspected strep throat. We hope you recover soon.
People forget you started doing this, a passion blog shared not just with your friends and family but with the entire public, out of the goodness of your own heart. We all get to know what is on sale at Costco without leaving our couches because of you who makes the trip multiple times a week. If anyone forgets that, they should be moderated as such or blocked out from early views for a month. Adults are sometimes just larger-sized children.
Yes I totally agreed. When our doctors think we have strep throat and told to go straight to ER, we would have followed without thinking twice and no questions asked. Due to this Covid-19, it seemed that we have forgotten what Tynan has done all these years of going into Costco searching for sales and posted them.
