Weekend Update – Costco Sale Items for Apr 24-26, 2020 for BC, AB, MB, SK

Location: Still Creek Burnaby, BC Costco Warehouse

SHOPPING REPORT:

Hi Everyone,

So my son has been getting up at 5:30AM or before every day for the past couple of weeks so since I was already up, I thought I would head over to Still Creek Costco and see how the line ups are over there.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had good luck these past two Fridays in terms of the line early in the morning.  Today, I arrived at the store at around 7:00AM and I got into the store around 8:30AM.  Last week was the employee shopping day and today was the day that Costco moved around the produce and pushed back the checkouts to allow more room for physical distancing inside the stores.

They physically moved all the checkouts back towards the wall which creates much more room for people to maneuver and line up through the checkout process.  The produce area was also moved around to create more room to walk around.

Stay safe and remember to wash your hands with soap and water often!

A quick reminder that if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, you should be self-isolating for 14 days.  Each province has their own Health recommendations based on the provinces individual risk assessment and I would recommend that you follow the recommendations for your specific province.  Information can be found at the following websites.

  1. If you’re a senior or immune compromised, the senior hours might be the busiest time to go (at least in Vancouver) I went last week during seniors hours (arrived at 7:20 a.m.) and joined a lineup that almost lapped the store. By the time the lineup started moving, the lineup had lapped the building behind me by 1 1/2 times. The line moved fairly fast and the store was fairly empty when I got in, but walking by all those people to get to the end of the lineup initially, can be intimidating and defeating. If you have trouble standing, you might want to pass on going at this time and try going during the day to see if there is much of a line up.

  2. Just a note, the maximum 50 people for mass gatherings does not apply to stores. The maximum number of people allowed in the store depends on the size of the store. Per the Retail Council, from the BC regulations page:

Provided that food and grocery retailers allow for physical distancing of 2 metres between people and an occupancy limit of 1 person for every 4 square metres, essential food and grocery retail stores can operate with 50 or more occupancy.  The Guidance Document for food and grocery retail is generally applicable to other retail settings.

So Abbotsford could let in a lot more people than Brighton based on size.

  3. Thank you! We just bought grass seed there at full price and need another bag. I think they’ll still do a price adjustment, and now we can get the sale price. It’s definitely harder to catch the sales with limited shopping trips, but your blog is helping alot!!

  4. Thank you SO much for all you do to help us out financially, by checking prices, and allowing us to view all deals and info before going to the store.
I think it also ensures we are in and out faster as we all have a list ready.

I never post on here, (or anywhere, for that matter), but feel a need to respond to the person asking if Costco employees are allowed to purchase before other members? They SHOULD BE! They are ensuring you are able to get your groceries by working!!! They are in contact with how many people a day??? And going home to their families?
COME ON!!! Where is the THANKS, and GRATFULNESS to these individuals? Do you really think they are not limited to quantities as well as the rest of us shopping? PLEASE!! Try to think of things to help your neighbour, instead of coming up with negative thoughts that are no help what-so-ever at a time like this!!! Maybe ask a Costco employee working full-time and perhaps has a couple young kids at home if you can help them by collecting there groceries for them? We are all in this together.

  5. They have crunchy peanut butter again!!
If only they’d bring back PB2.
Thank you for the Costco updates. We waited in line 30 minutes last weekend in St. Albert at 1 p.m. apparently the line up was over an hour earlier in the morning.

  6. Thank you for your continued updates. It’s nice to have a sense of what’s going on for when we need to go. I’m also really hoping you’ll let us know as soon as you see some of the key seasonal items some of us wait for, most notably the snowsuits and packable jackets!
    Thank you!

  7. Is 8am to 9am still for seniors? If it is do they enforce it? I’m 78 and hoping to find a quite time to shop.

    • The senior shopping hour seems to be the worst time to go. The lineup can be up to 1.5 hours to get in. Once you’re in the store it is quiet anytime of the day, as they limit how many are in the store, hence the lineups.

    • We tried to go to the seniors shop time. The lineup was over 600. People were going in as couples, so the 50 allowed was actually 25. As I can’t stand for even an hour I left and went to another store, but had missed their seniors shop time. The cashiers commented that the seniors shop time was the busiest and that it is best to avoid it.

    • I’ve heard they won’t be offering their usual plant center but will be selling soil etc in an outdoor aisle and selling some plants and baskets in aisles in the stores as people can’t social distance in garden centers. Call your local store to find out when plants will arrive.

      • Perhaps I spoke too soon as I just saw someone from Kelowna saying there will be. I will speak only for Winnipeg.

  8. Thank you for providing this update. Most people are fed up with the line-ups at the Willingdon/Still Creek location. Has the Costco employee shopping been eliminated or moved to another day?

I was told Costco employees, at least in the US, have first dibs on products when on sale or when high demand items like hand sanitizer, masks, toilet paper, and alcohol arrive. Perhaps things are different at Costco Canada locations, but I was told this by a Costco employee in California.

    • Costco Canada employees do not have “first dibs” on high demand items. I have multiple family members (including my wife) that are employees and we are still in need of certain items.

Costco graciously allowed their staff to have their own employee shopping day on Friday mornings and unfortunately selfish individuals of the public made this impossible. That has now been eliminated and they are trying to come up with alternate measures.

How dare those people not realize what these employees are doing by sacrificing themselves by going into work to serve the public each day. Shame on them.

Kudos to you, Costco employees…and to you Tynan for improving my Costco lists, one post at a time.

      • If they don’t have the items, they don’t have them. And if employee shopping day is Friday, they’re only getting “first crack” at things on Friday, otherwise, employees would shop after their shifts and take their chances at whether stuff is in stock just like anybody else. Now, they may have someone in receiving let them know that something came in, but unless they haul ass to the store or the store management is letting people put aside a number of items for staff (and by no means would I begrudge someone having to deal with the public all the time priority access to items needed to keep them safe) again, they’re not much better off than the public.
As for masks, gloves and hand sanitizer needed at work Costco (and all other employers) should be providing those items to staff.
I hope your wife stays safe Jason!

      • Jason K…..I totally hear you.
The medical profession including emergency services don’t have to line up in Canada, just show ID. I am sick at the people who complained. Sone people are unbelievable selfish. Grocery stores have a few opening hours sent aside for seniors to shop that has got people goat up. I work for an a business considered essential, customers think the staff get first dibs on essentials, we don’t. Sorry rant over.

      • who can we write to in support of employees getting their own shopping time?
In BC, I don’t know that I necessarily agree with health workers (or only health workers) getting preferential treatment. We have been lucky that covid has been pretty much a non-event for our health care workers, hospitals are dead quiet, covid testing tents are empty. Health care workers are fortunate in that they have proper PPE and containment strategies to deal with covid or potential covid patients. Other essential support workers like those at Costco do not have this luxury and have a far higher number of people coming through. Teachers are working insane hours trying to reinvent how they do their jobs while trying to do them, be counsellors for families and provide food. They are also providing childcare for health workers and expanding childcare to other essential workers as well as vulnerable special needs students without much protection and children do not understand spacing

    • I went to the willingdon location yesterday. Line up was short and moved fast! But man was it packed inside. It felt like a regular day at Costco.
