If you have been shopping at Costco any time in the last couple of weeks, you will know that it has been an extremely uncomfortable experience.  So when I walked into my Costco today, I was pleasantly surprised how organized, clean, and calm it was inside the store!  Costco is also created a Senior Shopping hour (between 8:00AM – 9:00AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays)!  So make sure to spread the word!

I arrived at the Langley Costco at 8:22AM.  As I walked towards the front door, I noticed that Costco was just opening the door and starting to let people in (about 40 minutes earlier than the posted opening time).  There were a couple of security guards at the front of the line who were directing people to the line for grocery shopping or the line for prescriptions.  Costco had blocked off all of the parking spaces against the side of the building and had created a line that spanned the length of the building.  It had ropes and pylons that snaked back a forth 4 times along the side of the building.

When I entered the line, the line had snaked back 3 times.  There were a couple of signs in the line to let people know to stay away from other shoppers in line and everyone seemed to be responsibly keeping a safe distance away.  Once you arrive in the store, there is someone inside the store passing out Disinfectant wipes for your buggy.  My recommendation is to bring your own so you can wipe your cart down before you bring it into the line.

There was a sign at the front of the building letting people know what items were out of stock, and what items had purchase limits.  Due to the fact that they were limiting the number of people inside the store, there was no line for paper products once you are inside the store.

The Wireless Phone Kiosk, Photo Printing, Hearing Aid, Optical areas were all closed.  I saw an optician helping out at the checkout so it looks like they are shuffling their employees around to keep them employed.  There are no more food samples in store – these employees have also been given the option to help out at the stores as well.

One of the employees told me that they were only letting 400-450 people inside the store at one time.  Keep in mind that Langley Costco is BIG.  There was lots of room to shop and move your cart around.  It felt more like shopping on a regualr weekday afternoon (much better than the last couple of weeks.  There was only 2 people in front of me in the checkout line.  Every second checkout line was closed to promote social distancing.  An extra employee has been assigned to the checkout.  In addition to the regular cashier and the employee to help load your buggy, there is now another employee to unload your cart for you!

If you need to wipe down your card, there are a couple containers sanitizing wipes in the meat section available for customers (for in-store use)

The food court is now limited to Hot Dogs, Whole Pizzas and Ice Cream only.  All the tables and chairs have been removed from the store – so no lingering.

Returns will no longer be accepted for Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Sanitizing Wipes, Water, Rice and Lysol.  I’m sure this will make a lot of people happy!

Stay safe and remember to wash your hands with soap and water often!

Happy Shopping!

  1. What is the point of a seniors hour when trucks don’t get to Costco until 9 am. So whatever was out of stock yesterday will still not be in stock at 8 am

    • Hi Gary, Costco stores a lot of its inventory in the shelves above the aisles. They don’t need trucks to come in to replenish their inventory. The store should be fully stocked at 8:00AM

  2. Just wondering if they’ve been running out of paper towel during the day. I won’t be able to go until this afternoon and it’s the main thing I need.

  3. I just phone the Langford Costco warehouse (Victoria) and they also have the Senior Shopping Hour: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:00 – 9:00 am. Must be 60 years old and cannot bring guests under 60.

    • Can anyone confirm whether this is the case? One of the comments above says they are allowing immunocompromised as well.

      • The person I spoke to on the phone in Regina stated this ^^^^. I had a chemo medication in Feb and have 0 immune system since.. but because I “appear” young and healthy they gave me grief from the minute I walked in to the point of leaving the store and was treated poorly at the tills. I went in with my disabled mom as well. So I was allowed to shop but felt ashamed every step of the way.. It was disgusting how I was treated.

  4. Happy to see Costco is “finally” putting limits on their products. Better late than never but the way people were acting and hoarding I think they were slow to implement the limits.
1 item of limited product per day per membership is also a good idea. Maybe limiting members to purchasing product once per week would cut down on the line ups? Obviously the people who are hoarding and buying up all the meat in stores aren’t concerned about the costs or spending large amounts of money. Really people do you have to go to Costco daily?
    Just saying!!!!

  5. Hello from Calgary,
I just phoned Costco and you must be 60 and over with ID. Also those of any age with a disability can also shop early. If you require help at all loading your car Costco Staff will help you. No exceptions.
In Calgary it’s on Tuesday and Thursday only, between 8:00 and 9:00 am.
Hope this helps, and good luck everyone!

  6. This is great news for Langley and I hope this practice spreads to other Costcos.

If this does, it will be most helpful for us seniors.

I hope they also establish a clear criteria – 60 or 65 or whatever and ask people to present proof of age. As a potential benificiary of this enlightened practice, I definitely would be proud to prove how ancient I am!

  7. Love the blog and it’s really helpful, thank you for keeping it up to date! There are quite many ads and interfering pop ups that make it confusing to navigate your page. I understand that you would like to offset some cost of the blog with ad money, but the ads are rather bothersome and make reading unenjoyable. Thank you.

  8. When it says limit one per membership does that mean my husband and I can only buy one if we have a joint membership, or would that be one for each of us?

We are thinking about going together this week to pick up supplies for us as well as buying for elderly parents and wanted to buy them toilet paper too.

    • Unless you had a different membership (one personal and perhaps one is a business), no you couldn’t each get one.

  9. I hear their definition of senior is 60 years and older. I was at Superstore today, and their seniors are 65 and over.

I checked Courtenay Costco for signs re senior hours, and they did not have any up. I askedCostco worker at gas bar if the store was going to allow early access, and he did not know.

  10. Does anyone know their definition of senior? It’s different from one store to another regarding senior days. But this is a little different than giving a discount. I wonder if 64 is considered or it’s 65 and up.

    • Hi Angela, I have heard rumours that this applies to other stores, but I can only speak for Langley (I don’t work for Costco), but you can always call your local store the check… or post your local store and someone may answer in the post.

    • Richmond BC location is also opening at 8am-9am Tue and Thu for seniors (60+) AND those with physical disabilities.
